I have been actively involved in alternative health care for almost 14 years. However, I’ve been exploring natural health and spirituality since I was 14 years old. After Catholic grade school, I continued searching for truth and the sacred in junior high, high school and beyond. In high school, after reading Food First by Frances Moore Lappe I became a vegetarian for both health and political/economic reasons, and I began my practice of yoga in between episodes of Kung Fu and the novels of Carlos Casteneda.
At age 19 I moved to Mexico to explore "the meaning of life" and "health." I explored both with a major in Political Economics at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (in Mexico City) and at the same time through my informal study of herbalism, homeopathy and traditional (native) healing methods.
Even though as an undergraduate I also fulfilled all the requirements for pre-med, for a number of different reasons I went on to get my Master’s and Ph.D. in Economics. I then spent 15 years as a professor of Economics at New Mexico State University. My research was on the economic transition in post-revolution Nicaragua as well as on capital concentration in Mexico and the effects of trade and economic liberalization on women in Latin America.
My passion for “healing” was not only at the national and global levels but was also at the personal level. Indeed, I was finding that in order for healing of economic systems and the global environment to take place, personal peace and healing also need to occur.
While in Mexico and even after coming back to the U.S. I dealt with chronic illnesses myself and watched friends and loved ones succumb to chronic disease, including cancer. The only conventional answer seemed to be suppressive therapies or surgery. And they didn’t seem to be working. As I witnessed an ever greater role for technology in our health care system (which in many ways is awesome), I could also see that there was less focus on wellness or prevention of disease or dealing with the root cause of disease. Every year, statistics showed that chronic disease continued to rise. These diseases seemed to be linked more to lifestyle, economics, environmental toxins and our emotions than to genetic problems (even though toxicity certainly influences our genes!). I knew there was a better way.
With my family's move to Columbia, Missouri I began to devote myself more full time to alternative/complementary health.
I have completed several degree programs in the field of Natural Health Sciences, including a Doctor of Naturopathy degree as well as a degree in Homeopathy. Other certifications include Neurolinguistic Programming, Theta Healing, Dark-Field Microscopy, Iridology, Kinesionics, BodyTalk, Sacred Contracts (with Carolyn Myss), and course work in Functional Blood Chemistry analysis, Endocrinology, and Neurotransmitters and Brain Chemistry.
Besides my formal training in Western science at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and in various natural health courses at the University of Natural Medicine (in New Mexico), the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut), and Clayton College of Natural Health (independent study/distance learning), I have had extensive training in natural and complementary medicine at the above locations, and have had two years' clinical training at a natural health center in Springfield, Missouri.
In working with you, my focus is on listening to the wisdom of your life force, guiding you through the healing process, and providing services which may be part of that process. Healthy nutrition and lifestyle along with spiritual and emotional wellness are the keys to our physical health. However, those things are not at all simple and straightforward in our complicated and fast-paced, intense society. Thus, at any specific time in our lives we may need some additional coaching or intervention. At Yes to Life, I always attempt to use the most natural the most minimal intervention. This can include nutritional supplementation, homeopathy, herbs, bio-energy work, and other natural healing methods to help you improve your health. I take great care to research the quality of products that I use and do my best to make sure that they have been produced in the cleanest and most ecologically and sustainable way.
I am certified through the American Naturopathic Medical Certification Board, the American Alternative Medical Association (AAMA) and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). I am a member of the ANMA (American Naturopathic Medical Association), the National Center for Homeopathy (NCH), and the Coalition for Natural Health (CNH).
