The tissues and cells of the human body are composed of 16 chemical elements. The balance or equilibrium of these chemical elements in the body is an essential factor in the maintenance of health and healing of disease.  The acid-alkaline balance plays a vital role in this balanced body chemistry. All foods, after digestion and absorption produce either an acid or alkaline effect on the body depending on their mineral composition.  The normal body chemistry is approximately 20 per cent acid and 80 per cent alkaline. This is the acid-alkaline balance.  Acidity and alkalinity are measured by the pH of the fluid. 

The symbol pH stands for pondus Hydrogenii (which is the weight of hydrogen ); pH is the measurement of the hydrogen-ion concentration in a liquid. The body and the food we eat are made up of hydrogen-ions. 

When referring to the human body, the symbol pH is used to indicate the exact strength of an acid or a base liquid. Our body is 60% liquid and 40% of this liquid is the fluid in the body’s some 50-100 trillion cells. It must be a clear, mineral liquid, and balanced with respect to the blood pH for the cells to maintain health and to function properly. 

pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14. Number 7 on a pH scale is called Neutral which is a point of balance. Pure water is a Neutral solution. It contains an equal amount of both acidity and alkalinity.  Anything below 7 is more acid, with 0 being the most acid. Anything above 7 is more alkaline up to 14, which is the most alkaline.

The pH scale is also logarithmic which means that each number is 10 times more than or 10 times less than the number it is next to.  The following are examples:  6 is 10 times more acid than 7;  5 is 10 times more acid than 6;  4 is 10 times more acid than 5 etc.  Another way of saying it is:  6 is 10 times more acid than 7; 5 is 100 times more acid than 7; On the other side of the scale, 8 is 10 times more alkaline than 7; 9 is 100 times more alkaline than 7, etc.

The normal pH of the blood is between 7.35 and 7.45,  which is just above neutral and is slightly alkaline. It is maintained within this narrow range by the working of the lungs and the kidneys. If the blood pH ever drops out of its narrow range it has a deleterious effect on our health. The body will do whatever is necessary within its capability to maintain this pH balance in the blood stream. For example, this drop in blood pH may lead the body to borrow alkaline minerals, including calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium from vital organs, muscles, and bones to neutralize acid and remove it from the body. If the body becomes too acid and remains that way, it will allow disease (e.g. viruses, bacteria, candida or other yeasts, cancer, and a host of other diseases) to live in the body’s tissues or organs while it uses the alkaline reserves in the body to maintain the blood pH. In other words, it will sacrifice the rest of the body to disease in order to maintain the blood pH.  Over-acidity which persists for years can cause severe damage. 

It is important to maintain an ideal pH in other bodily fluids as well.  The normal average saliva pH is 6.5 (between 6.0 and 6.8).  This allows for proper enzyme production and the beginnings of proper digestion of foods.  The pH of the urine changes throughout the day, depending on the foods that are eaten.  The most acid urine of the day is that of the morning, since the kidneys have worked throughout the night to metabolize acidic waste.  However, when the body is in a balanced alkaline-acid state, the ideal range is between 6.3 and 6.6.  

All diseases live and grow in an acid environment inside the body; the more acid the body, the more the disease will grow. In fact, the dying process is a process of unhealthy microorganisms consuming the body. Living within all bodies are many different types of microorganisms, both good and bad.  As the body becomes more acid, circulation of blood and oxygen diminished, and microorganisms that would normally be kept in balance begin to live and multiply in their ideal environment, which is an acidic biological terrain. Along with the development of organisms such as candida, free radical damage is more likely to occur, and other problems such as fatigue, joint pain, reduction in oxygen, and immune system deficiencies can occur.

We do not need germs, bacteria or viruses entering into our body in order to develop a disease. All we need is an acid body which will signal the microorganisms in your body to mutate and they will create a disease, by the simple process of consuming (destroying) living cells and organs.  

When the body eventually dies, all circulation of blood stops, and these microorganisms mutate and change into living organisms that will totally consume the entire body. 

To say it as simply as possible, we need to keep our bodies in a balanced alkaline state so that the living microorganisms in our bodies work for our health and do not mutate into harmful microorganisms. 

In the same way that an acid body will signal the microorganisms to start to mutate, making the body alkaline again will send a signal to these same microorganisms to mutate back to their normal state and work in harmony within the body.  If your body is well-nourished, relatively toxin-free and in acid-alkaline balance, there is more likelihood that disease will be short lived.

What causes the body to be acidic? 

All the foods and liquids that we eat and drink are either acid or alkaline, with (pure) water being neutral. Foods and liquids that create an acid body, will measure from 7 down to 0 on the pH scale, forcing the body to turn more acid. Foods and liquids that create an alkaline body, will measure from 7 up to 14 on the pH scale, forcing the body to turn more alkaline.  Unfortunately, most of what we eat is acidic in nature and, therefore, changes the balance toward acidity called METABOLIC ACIDOSIS.

The SAD--- Standard American Diet (as well as some of the high protein diets). The diet SAD is too high in acid-producing foods like meat and fish, white flour, sugar, alcohol, most dairy products, coffee and soft drinks, processed and refined vegetable oils, white or processed vinegar, and too low in alkaline-producing foods like fresh vegetables. Infections, smoking, stress, and a sedentary life style tend to make the body more acidic. 

Check and Alkalize your Body
There are two ways that a common person can check their pH at home by themselves. You can check the pH of your body by measuring the pH of the saliva under the tongue or by checking your urine. The saliva under the tongue is not a good test of the body pH since the amount of carbon dioxide in you blood will affect the readings which shows up readily in the saliva. The lungs are constantly adjusting the body pH by the very act· of breathing which is the release of 12 % of the body moisture. This moisture will be either acid or alkaline depending on what the body is doing internally to adjust the pH at the moment. The saliva is not an accurate indicator. The saliva will generally read higher than the urine when the body is acid and generally lower than the urine when the body is alkaline. 

The best way to check pH is to measure the urine since the body will be releasing the excess acid or alkalinity that it does not need. So if your urine reads in the acid range it means that the body is releasing its excess acid which generally means it has too much acid in the body. When you are very alkaline the body will release this excess alkalinity in the urine. We want to make the body alkaline so that we can see the alkalinity in our urine when we check it. 

To test your pH you must purchase Litmus paper which is available through your health food stores or have them order it for you. The litmus paper is easy to use and it comes in generally two common types. One type measures the complete range of pH from 0 to 14. The other type measures pH from 4.5 to 7.5 or from 5 to 8, which is within the range that you will be working in, either types will work fine. Those that break the range of pH down to fractions are easiest to read. Example; litmus paper that goes from 4.5 to 7.5 will read as 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6 6.5, 7, and 7.5 making it easier to read and compare the color chart. The litmus paper that goes from 5.5 to 8 will read as 5.5, 5.8, 6.0, 6.2, 6.4, 6.6, 6.8, 7.0, 7.2, 7.4, 7.6 and 8.0. This makes it very easy to read the color chart. 

The best time to measure your pH is when you get up first thing in the morning before you do anything else. I suggest that you start out by checking your pH under the tongue and in the urine at the same time and this will begin to educate you on how your body works. Use a short strip of pH test paper about 3/4 to 1 inch long. Put it under the tongue and let it soak up the saliva (about 5 to 10 seconds ) until fully wet and compare it to the color coded chart that comes on the litmus paper container to get your reading. Write it down and keep a daily record for the next couple of months. Now test your urine which you will collect in a clean cup. Dip the litmus paper in the urine and compare it to the color coded chart and keep a record of your reading. Now discard the two test strips of litmus paper. The greatest majority of people will find that the reading under the tongue is higher than the urine reading. As you work to alkalize the body these two readings will come close together with the urine reading generally becoming higher as the body becomes alkaline. 

How to Alkalize

It will generally take from 2 to 4 months for an average person to bring their alkaline level up to the range of 7. The more acid your body is the longer it will take, also bigger bodies will take longer. The easiest way to do this is by Juicing Fresh Vegetables and consuming about 12 to 16 ounces of this fresh juice every day. When you reach the alkaline range you will have learned by experience what it takes to keep your body alkaline. You will need less of this fresh juice to keep it there and will probably only need to check your alkaline level once or twice a week after that. 

Some minerals that are important to alkalize the body and maintain that level are salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium. These minerals must be in the body as reserves for the body to use when needed. Your body will alkalize quicker when you supplement the juicing by taking a daily mineral supplement.  

Fresh asparagus juice will also alkalize the body quickly. Juice about 8 to 12 asparagus spears to get 4 ounces of asparagus juice and also juice a large sweet potato or two to make it taste better. You may want to have 8 ounces of juice in the morning and 8 ounces in the evening. Or you may want to have 12 ounces just in the morning. Make a schedule that works for your life style. There are many combinations of vegetable juices that will alkalize the body, these that I have just suggested are at the top of the list and they can all be mixed together. These are the juices that will alkalize the body the easiest. 

This list will give you a general idea of the amount of juice these ingredients make: 
Carrots - 2 medium to large will make about 4 ounces of juice. 
Celery - 2 medium to large will make about 4 ounces of juice. 
Sweet potato - 1 medium will make about 4 ounces of juice.
Asparagus - 8 to 12 spears will make about 4 ounces of juice.  
Apple - 1 small apple will make about 3 ounces of juice.  Apples are more acid and are only used in this combination to add flavor. Use small apples.
Radishes are used to support the thyroid functions and the average person only needs about 3 per week. A person with thyroid problems would benefit from about 3 per day for about 30 or 60 days then drop down to 1 a day. 
Radish - 3 radishes, 1 inch diameter will make 1/4 ounce of juice.
Beet - 1 beet 2 inches in diameter will make about 1 ounce of juice always add radishes  and beets to your main juice as they are slightly bitter and the main juice will mask the taste.  Beets are used to support the liver functions and the average person only needs about 1 beet per week. Use 3 per week if you have liver problems.

When you begin to alkaline the body you must also eliminate the foods that create an acid body. You must balance your diet by eating 20% to 25% acid foods and 75% to 80% alkaline foods (fresh vegetables). The more alkaline that your diet is, the quicker you will alkalize the body. All animal meats, animal products, fish, dairy products, poultry and its products, all processed foods, all refined foods, all fermented foods and yeast products, sugars, artificial sweeteners, teas, coffee, all carbonated beverages and many fruits and many grains will create acidity in the body.  Vegetables, minerals, and pure water will help alkaline the body.  High protein diets are very acidic.

It is important to start getting the majority of your proteins form vegetable sources that are not cooked, fried, baked or processed in any way~ in other words, eating your vegetables in their natural raw state. Cooked vegetables and cooked foods are more acid and cooking your vegetables also destroys all the enzymes. Lightly steaming your vegetables is an excellent way to fix them. Eating your vegetables raw (fresh) will give you a steady flow of live enzymes (proteins) in your diet which is another necessity. A body depleted of enzymes cannot stay healthy. Enzymes are numerous types of proteins that are produced by living organisms that are necessary to control the chemical reactions in the body at the rate that the body needs for these chemical reactions to happen. There are no enzymes in processed and refined foods, only fresh vegetables and fruits have the proper live enzymes. 

When you juice your vegetables, immediately drink the juice since the enzymes start dying when they are exposed to oxygen. Most enzymes die after about 5 minutes of exposure to air. For this reason do not store fresh vegetable juices, always make them fresh.

Refined sugars must be eliminated permanently since it contains no positive ions and will bring the body into an acid state very quickly and keep it there. You will not be able to alkaline the body if you are on a steady diet of products that contain refined sugars such as candies, sweets, chocolates, bakery products, snack foods, Syrups, sweetened drinks, etc. Start reading the labels on all foods and drinks and eliminate all those with sugars.

Eliminate most dairy and cheese products. The calcium that you get from vegetables is much more readily available to your cells than that in dairy.   One of the complaints you hear from people is that they cannot get their calcium by giving up their milk and dairy products. Stop and think, where do the cows get their calcium from?  They get it from the greens that they eat, and you can do the same by eating green vegetables; or if you prefer grass, you can take wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa or oat grass powders. 

Limit poultry products to once or twice a week. Not fried, grilled only. Limit fish to once or
twice a week. Not fried, grilled only. 

Eliminate coffee; it has an acid pH of 5 and it also dehydrates the body. Eliminate teas; they 
also have an acid pH similar to coffee. Use herbal teas for intended purposes, limiting them while working to alkalize the body. 

Limit the amount of fruits to very small amounts while working to alkalize the body, since they are more acid than vegetables.

Always think of fruits as the cleaners of the body as they are more acid, and think of vegetables as the builders of the body since they are more alkaline. 

Eliminate all canned and bottled beverages; they are more acid than water and the carbonation in them changes the calcium-phosphorus ratio in the body, opening the door to osteoporosis. Canned vegetables also have less minerals in general.

Make pure water your beverage of choice.  The pH of water is ideally 7, and the body's cells require a clear low mineral fluid, balanced around the blood pH of 7.35 to stay healthy.  Some bottled water (like Dasani) has a much lower pH.   Only pure water will be 7, and mineral water will be higher.  You can add lemon juice or lime juice to your water for flavor, as these juices  will turn more alkaline after entering the body. 

Install the best water filter you can afford on your faucet if you drink tap water in order to filter out all chlorine and other harmful elements. Chlorine is poison (and is a carcinogen); that is why it kills bacteria in the water. Chlorine will also kill the friendly bacteria in your intestines. Your body does not need the extra poison and your liver has to detox this poison out of the body. Eventually this constant flow of chlorine will damage the body and the organs.  If possible, also put a chlorine filter on your bathtub and shower head since chlorine absorbs very quickly through the skin when taking warm baths and showers. Taking a hot shower or bath in chlorinated water is actually many times worse than drinking chlorinated water.

Other Considerations

      Many people are infected with parasites and candida (yeast) in their body. If you have these you will have a hard time or may not be able to alkaline the body since all these are living microorganisms that feed on the nutrients in your body and they produce an acid waste product that stays in the body  you will have to eliminate these microorganisms and clean out their waste products in order to eliminate all the excess acid build up in the body. You can often do this by using herbal supplements, but in cases of serious infections, sometimes pharmaceutical agents can be necessary.  Oregano oil is sometimes beneficial to rid oneself of parasites.

Another reason that people cannot alkalize easily may be heavy metal toxicity.  At our clinic we have three ways of testing for an overload of heavy metals in the body: urine analysis, hair analysis, and blood microscopy.  

Yet another reason that it is difficult for some people to alkalize is that they have food intolerances.  When a food cannot be easily digested due to an intolerance or lack of sufficient digestive enzymes, the food will putrify in the stomach, causing the level of acidity to rise dramatically.  Even if one is doing all the other ‘right’ things to alkalize, continuing to eat foots which the body treats as antigens will continue to create an acid terrain.

Be Patient & Persistent

When you reach the point that your urine pH goes over 7.0 and stays there, then you can start adding more fruits to your diet and observing the changes it makes to your pH. Give the body some time to adjust. After you get that all figured out then you can add more poultry products to your diet and see what kind of changes it will make. While· you are doing all this remember to keep a daily record of your pH and keep notes. When people get to this point they seldom return to their old ways of eating acid foods since they now feel healthy, full of energy and can once again enjoy life. When people balance their pH to the alkaline level of the blood and keep it there an interesting thing happens. Their energy level returns to a high level and stays there. 

Overweight people start to lose excess weight without trying and underweight people start to gain a normal amount of body weight. The body weight will balance itself to its normal weight as long as it stays alkaline, and there are no other problems. Remember:  Balance your meals with 20 to 25 % acid foods and 75 to 80 % alkaline foods (see Alkalizing Diet).
Do not get discouraged when starting out to alkalize the body since the initial progress will be slow. If you start out with a urine pH around 4, realize that your body is 1,000 times more acid than it should be. It could take two or three months before your readings come up to the pH 5 level. This level 5 is 100 times more acid than normal and from this level it will take less time, possibly several weeks or more to reach the 6 pH level. At this point the progress will happen more quickly since you are only 10 times more acid than normal. Be patient as your body adjusts back to a balanced level. Your urine pH will never stay at one number consistently, it will drift within a range of from 6.8 to 7.8. 

There are no short cuts to balance the body pH, you will have to change your eating habits and eliminate many foods that cause the acid condition. This will cause you to make many life style changes by learning about and eliminating acid forming foods. If you think you can do this by simply eating and drinking green supplements and still consume acid forming foods, you will be terribly disappointed. You will never achieve and maintain blood level pH without the proper foods. I recommend buying a good juicer (I like Vita-Mix, but Greenpower Juicer 1304 is good too) and two or three juicing books that will get you started on getting what you need directly from every day natural food sources. There are many supplements that you can buy to bring your pH up that work very well. The problem is that people get tired of taking expensive supplements and eventually give up since they never became serious about making fundamental changes and make the effort learning about how food affects their body. Instead of educating themselves how to balance their pH, many people give their power away to someone else who is selling products to solve their problem. Take your own power back. Make your own supplements from fresh vegetables, especially by learning to juice vegetables and even fruits. You learn about yourself when you faithfully check your pH every day and get personal with your food, you learn what works for you and balancing your pH becomes a personal goal and accomplishment.
